Now she watched a young man pull into the McGregors’ drive. There was a big dog in his front seat. Emma briefly wondered if it was one of Carla’s friends, but then quickly discounted the idea. For starters, she knew Carla wasn’t home because she’d heard her leave more than an hour earlier. Normally Carla left around 9 to work out at the Club, Emma knew. The McGregors belonged to her club, and on more than one occasion she had seen the young woman exercising on Tuesday mornings; she played tennis Monday and Thursday afternoons and exercised in the gym most other days. But Emma couldn’t believe Carla would be exercising today.

She watched the man—tall, dark hair, angular—get out of his jeep and shut the door. And then she thought she recognized him. As he approached the McGregors’ front door, she suddenly remembered. He had been on the news last night, with that nice sheriff. He was the expert who said something about cougars being rare and that the public shouldn’t be worried. He’d been handsome on TV, she remembered. But he’d been sitting, and now she could see he was tall and the opposite of what they said TV did to people—made them appear larger than they were. This man, she remembered, was in some kind of law enforcement. Something official, but Emma couldn’t recall.

And that’s when Emma decided it was time to get her mail. Her mailbox sat at the end of her drive, just 30 feet from the McGregors’ front door. And since Carla was gone, she wouldn’t answer the door. Emma thought it was a priceless morning for fishing (what morning wasn’t?), so she hurriedly glanced in a living room mirror, composing herself.
